18k Gold Hathor Pendant

A$690.00

This 18k Yellow Gold Hathor pendant symbolises the ancient Egyptian diety of pleasure, love and beauty. Her name also means Temple of Horus. She was known in Greece as Aphrodite and in the Roman empire as Venus. Hathor took on many forms throughout Egyptian history and was associated with different goddesses, initially with Sekhmet and then with Isis. Eventually, she became the primeval goddess responsible for the origin of all other goddesses. Over the years, the veneration of Hathor eventually shifted to the veneration of Isis, though the two goddesses are closely related.

Symbolically, Hathor embodied all the feminine qualities, especially motherhood, because she produced all life and succored the pharaoh, the king. Thus, symbolically, she was the mother of each Egyptian king. She was also the mother of Horus, whose right eye was the sun. Mirrors in Egypt, of gold or bronze, were cast in the shape of the sun disk, and since they were used in connection with beauty, they were associated with Hathor, patron of cosmetics. Sometimes the handles of mirrors were emblazoned with Hathor's face. As "The Mistress of Turquoise," she was the goddess revered by miners who dug turquoise in the Sinai.
